Earwax is produced by glands in the ear canal. It's purpose is to trap dust and other small particles and prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum. Wax also has anti-sceptic properties helping to reduce the risk of infection in the outer ear.

The quantity of earwax produced varies greatly from person to person, however sometimes earwax does not come out of the ear naturally. This can cause a build-up or blockage of earwax which would require removal.
